About Smiley transparent PNG images

A round face and two dots

A smiley face starts with a circle. Two dots for eyes and a curved line for a mouth turn it into a face, and small changes to those three marks change the whole mood. Eyes that close into arcs read as laughter, one eye shut reads as a wink, and a mouth that opens wide reads as a yawn or a shout. The faces in this gallery stay close to that plain build: a round yellow face, simple eyes and a simple mouth, with a hat, a bow or sunglasses added where the mood asks for it. Colours run from yellow through pink, blue, green, purple, red, orange, black and white.

The expressions in this set

Happy leads the set, as a wide grin, a closed-eye laugh and a shy blush, but the rest of the expressions spread wide. Winking, surprised, sleepy, thinking, confused and determined faces sit beside the laughing ones, and the cold blue face with snowflakes stands next to the hot red face with steam. Love shows as heart shaped eyes, mischief as small red horns, and calm as a night mask and closed eyes. A face on a balloon floats above the rest, a face in a wooden frame hangs still, and a face on a badge reads like a sticker. Three faces laugh together in a row, a pair winks at each other, and single faces fill the rest of the gallery, each one drawn from plain shapes with nothing written on it.

Cards, chats and classroom walls

Greeting cards take the biggest share. A happy face or a laughing face fills a birthday card or a thank you note, and a winking face suits a joke shared between friends. Chat stickers use the small faces, where a single expression says what the message is about before the words load. Teachers put the faces on charts and reward boards, where a plain shape reads clearly from a distance and prints cheaply in colour. Party planners use the faces with hats on invitations and table cards, and shop owners put a smiley on a voucher or a sale sign, where a friendly face draws the eye.

Sizing a smiley for a page

Every picture in this gallery has a transparent background. A single face can sit on a card, a sticker sheet or a badge, and a row of three faces runs along the bottom of a poster or a banner. A face on a balloon suits the top of an invitation. Yellow faces read best on pale pages, while the blue, black and white faces still read well on darker ones.
