About Christmas ball transparent PNG images

Where the glass bauble came from

Glass baubles began in Lauscha, a glassblowing town in Germany. In the 1840s, makers there blew thin glass spheres and silvered the inside so the balls caught candlelight on the tree. Before that, families hung nuts, apples and paper roses, and glass was the cheaper, longer-lasting option. The baubles travelled. By the 1890s, Woolworth stores in America were importing them in quantity, and the decorated tree moved beyond wealthy homes. Early balls were fragile, and plenty broke in transit. Shatterproof plastic versions arrived much later, but the round glass ball is still the shape most people reach for first.

The finishes: gloss, glitter, frost and crackle

Finish is the first thing that sorts the gallery. Glossy balls have a hard shine and one bright highlight. Matte balls sit soft and flat. Glitter balls sparkle across their whole coating, and frosted balls look dusted with snow, while a crackled finish breaks the surface into fine lines. Colours cover the standard red, gold and silver, then run on into blue, green, pink, purple and white.

Decoration on the balls stays generic. You will find stripes, polka dots, swirls and snowflakes etched or painted onto the glass, and nothing carries words, characters or logos. The forms vary more than the patterns do: a single ball hanging on its string, pairs at uneven heights, a straight row of six, clusters and loose piles, balls heaped in a bowl, and garlands with balls strung along a cord. A few ornaments rest on pine branches among the needles. Every ball keeps its cap and hanging loop, the little metal top the string ties to.

Decorating with baubles away from the tree

Most baubles end up on the tree, but the season gives them other work. A wreath ringed with small balls hangs on a front door or above a mantel. Loose balls fill glass bowls and vases on the table, and one glossy ball next to a place setting can dress a whole Christmas dinner layout. The same shapes turn up on greeting cards, shop banners, sale graphics and social media posts all through December, long after the tree itself comes down.

Working with these cutouts

Each ornament here has a transparent background, so a bauble can hang over dark green branches, a snowy scene or a plain coloured card and keep its string and its clean edge. Sizes run from small tree balls up to large centrepieces.
